Thompson in Sierra Leone
Dr. Bankole Thompson, professor of criminal justice at EKU, is serving as one of eight judges on a special United Nations regional court meeting in Sierra Leone, Africa.
Thompson was unanimously elected presiding judge of the Trial Chamber of the Court.
Established by an agreement between Sierra Leone and the United Nations, the special court is authorized to prosecute and punish all those who bear the greatest responsibility for violations of international humanitarian law, and specified provisions of Sierra Leone criminal law in Sierra Leone since October 1996.
