President Glasser and Joe Beck, center, professor of environmental health, welcomed Walter Howard, Environmental Health Director for Clayton County, Ga., to the Environmental Health and Safety Symposium held March 25 in the Keen Johnson Ballroom. Howard, who graduated from EKU in 1983 with a B.S. in environmental health science, spoke at the symposium.

EKU’s fifth annual Earth Days in the Cumberlands celebration throughout April includes a wide variety of educational programs and hands-on activities designed to heighten awareness of environmental issues in the Commonwealth and beyond.

You’ve seen them in larger urban bookstores: cozy coffee shops where patrons can take a break from their browsing or research, meet with friends over refreshments and discuss the issues of the day.

Patrons of EKU’s Crabbe Library now have the same opportunity.

The Library Café, located in a scenic atrium adjacent to the University Building, will serve various hot and cold beverages as well as light sandwiches, wraps, pastries, breads and vegetarian options. The computers formerly housed in the space have been distributed throughout the library, but seven remaining computers will offer Internet access for customers.


The Department of Criminal Justice and Police Studies in the College of Justice & Safety will host a mini-conference of “Dangling Conversations” about crime and justice April 8-10.

Several events are scheduled at EKU as part of the national monthlong Prevent Child Abuse observance “We Can Make a Difference.” The campus programs, coordinated with Prevent Child Abuse Kentucky, will include a candlelight vigil and seminars on child abuse prevention and Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Tickets for the EKU Theatre production of “How the Other Half Loves” will go on sale Monday, April 5.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Office of Student Life is sponsoring a free two-day Women’s Expo March 30-31 in the Powell Building.


Graduate student Carrie Johnson took advantage of the rise in temperatures last week to enjoy a picnic in the Ravine with her children Mason and Olivia.

Students wishing to enroll in summer classes at EKU have several scheduling options from which to choose.

A team from EKU placed third in its division in the National Mock Trial Tournament, held March 12-14 on the EKU campus.

Two recent student editors of The Eastern Progress have been selected as Leaders of the Student Press in North America.
