“Aytz Chaim,” written by Drew Shanefield for – and dedicated to – the Eastern Kentucky University Wind Symphony, was a finalist in the second annual Frank Ticheli International Composition Competition.
The EKU Wind Symphony’s performance of the work’s premiere at the 2008 Kentucky Music Educators Association In-Service Conference was recorded for submission to the competition.
For the past 10 years under the leadership of EKU Director of Bands Joe Allison, the EKU Bands have made a concerted effort to add to the wind repertory by commissioning new works, beginning with “A Stephen Foster Fantasy,” commissioned from Dr. Gordon “Dick” Goodwin, Composer-In-Residence at The University of South Carolina, in 1990.
“Drew Shanefield was chosen for the latest project because of his unique approach to composition and the fact that he was a newer, not-yet-recognized voice,” Allison explained. “Even as a ‘young’ writer, he has had several successful works in other media, and his techniques transfer very well to concert winds and percussion. We were also enthused with his willingness to work directly with our Wind Symphony and make our students an active part of the composition process.”
The composition’s title, “Aytz Chaim,” means “circle of years” and the work was inspired by the composer’s early experiences in the Jewish faith. Shanefield attended the premiere performance of the piece at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville.
“This access to the composer made the experience truly ‘hands on’ for the performers!" noted Allison. The recognition of the composition as a finalist in the Frank Ticheli International Composition Competition is a major accomplishment.
Approximately 150 entries were received from 12 countries for this year’s competition. The piece was one of 23 finalists in its category.
“Of course, we’re elated,” Allison said. “This nomination brings honor to the composer and the EKU Wind Symphony and fulfills the objective of adding quality material to the band repertory.”
“Aytz Chaim” is on the EKU Wind Symphony’s latest release, “Litany and Legacy: Dedicated to Dr. Robert W. Hartwell,” available through the EKU Bands Office.
The EKU band program is a Charter Member of the National Wind Ensemble Consortium Group, founded at the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut. Other members include The University of Texas, Michigan State University, The University of Michigan, and the Detroit Symphony Winds.
