May 22, 2009

Dr. Jan Colbert, professor ofphoto of Jan Colbert accounting, is the recipient of the sixth annual Jack L. Dyer Excellence in Teaching Award at Eastern Kentucky University.

The award is given annually to a business faculty member who is considered by peers, students, and administrators to demonstrate excellent classroom instruction.

“I’m honored to be selected as this year’s Jack L. Dyer Excellence in Teaching Award recipient,” said Colbert, who is also director of the MBA Program and AACSB International Accreditation Coordinator for EKUBusiness. “Dr. Dyer's legacy of excellent teaching is well-known and it is humbling to follow in his footsteps as well as those of others who have been named Dyer award recipients in previous years. The award is especially significant to me, as Dr. Dyer’s specific area of teaching was auditing, as mine is!”

The selection committee for the award cited Colbert’s commitment to excellence in the classroom, supported by consistent high evaluations from her students and peers, as factors in choosing her for the honor.

“In addition, Dr. Colbert has devoted a great deal of time and energy to curriculum development and instructional technology to enhance her teaching that contributes to her staying on the ‘cutting edge’ of her discipline. Dr. Colbert’s commitment to providing quality educational experiences for students is exemplary,” committee members noted.

The Dyer award will be presented at a luncheon in Colbert’s honor this fall. Dr. and Mrs. Dyer will be invited to present the award, which will include a $1,000 cash award, a personal plaque, and her name inscribed on a permanent plaque with all past award recipients.

Dyer served the EKU business program for more than 30 years, including 13 as director of the University’s MBA Program, before retiring in 2002.
