October 02, 2009

Eastern Kentucky University’s Fire and Safety Engineering Technology Program received accreditation from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress.

The unanimous accreditation, for a five-year period, followed a self-study and site visit.

“The site team spoke highly of the strength of the program curriculum, faculty credentials, facilities and the student organization,” said Dr. Larry Collins, chair of the Department of Safety, Security and Emergency Management. “They also praised the efforts of the Libraries, Registrar, Academic Affairs and all the offices they visited.”

Approximately 450 students are enrolled in the program, and EKU boasts one of the largest student chapters of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers.

EKU’s Fire and Safety Engineering Technology Program, established in 1975, is one of the few nationwide that offers undergraduate degrees in fire and safety. Concentrations include Fire Administration, Fire Protection Engineering Technology, Fire/Arson Explosion and Industrial Safety and Risk Management.

The baccalaureate fire administration option is now available in its entirety online.
