Dorothy Sutton Poetry Reading: "Backing Into Mountains"
Foundation Professor Emeritus of English Dorothy Sutton, who was raised on a small farm in Kentucky, will read from her new book of poems, "Backing Into Mountains." Sutton began her education in a one-room school and later struggled toward higher degrees in days when women received little encouragement in such endeavors.
There is no self-pity in the poems, only honest, accurate descriptions in imaginative, elegant language, as Sutton explores her subject matter of Kentucky settings and world-wide scope: Mammoth Cave, horses, tobacco stripping, coal mining, Appalachia, hog killing, basketball, Colonel Sanders' Fried Chicken, Casey Jones, Daniel Boone…poems with universal appeal, but especially compelling for people who know and understand Kentucky and for those who would like to.
