The Kentucky Department of Public Health has produced a newsletter, "Kentucky Fluview H1N1 Weekly Surveillance Report." You can view this document, as well as future editions, by going to www.prepare4flu.eku.edu and clicking on "H1N1 News Updates." The newsletters will be listed by date of publication.
Join us for “What is Service-Learning? An Introduction to Academic Service-Learning” presented by Gayle Hilleke, Executive Director of Kentucky Campus Compact. The session will take place on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Kennamer Lounge of the Powell Building. This presentation is open to anyone in the campus community who would like to learn more about service-learning and how it differs from volunteerism and others forms of experiential learning.

Improving communication in the workplace is critical. When communication breaks down, a number of other issues typically arise. This four-hour workshop will teach the most valuable skill of all - how to communicate effectively with people. Effective communication leads to increased efficiency and effectiveness of workers.
You will gain powerful communication skills such as how to express your ideas in ways that gain attention and support, how to make a positive impression, and how to communicate with difficult people in tough situations. The seventh biennial all-day public reading of "Paradise Lost" will be held from sunup to sundown on Thursday, Nov. 19, in the EKU Meditation Chapel, and voices are still needed.
Classes welcome; proof of attendance and/or participation will be supplied upon request.

EKU's chapter Society of Professional Journalists is hosting a Kentucky Environmental Journalism Conference Friday, Nov. 13, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Powell Student Center.
Tom Eblen, columnist and former managing editor for the Lexington Herald-Leader, will give the keynote address. The conference will feature panels on covering coal, agriculture as an environmental issue, water issues, the Environmental Research Institute at Eastern and tips from reporters on the environmental beat.
Deadline to register is Monday, Nov. 9. Registration is $15 and includes continental breakfast, lunch and conference handouts. EKU students attend free with pre-registration. Everyone is invited to join us on selected Friday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. in Crabbe Library Room 201 for a hour of informal, moderated discussion over articles of various topics selected by EKU faculty. Refreshments will be provided by EKU Student Government Association.

Interested faculty and department representatives are invited to the GSD Round Table on Wednesday, Nov. 4, to learn more about GSD 101 Foundations of Learning, a QEP initiative. GSD 101 is a three-credit hour orientation course that incorporates Critical and Creative Thinking into a first-year experience class. Hear current instructors discuss the benefits of this course for their students, their disciplines and their own instruction. While you visit, enjoy a piece of pie and hear what happens when students are challenged through a critical thinking curriculum to explore, expand, evaluate and express!
